Ravin’s new R500 Series Crossbows deliver staggering speeds of 500 feet per second with a 400-grain arrow-making them the fastest and most powerful crossbows ever created. The manufacturers are hurting that cause and hurting potential sales in the future if we cannot expand the number of states that allow crossbows.NEW RAVIN R 500 SERIES CROSSBOWS SHATTERS INDUSTRY SPEEDS: It is my goal to see crossbows legal in every archery season in every state. I am not a fan of the speed game for that reason. As speeds increases, some that supported crossbow inclusion or are indifferent to it, state some concerns that it is moving away from the intent of archery. So, we haven't come tremendously far on that front but there are certainly more models to choose from and some less expensive models also push that speed envelope. 10 years ago, the fastest crossbow was shooting 425fps. Being in the crossbow industry, I can tell you with great certainty that the majority of crossbows sold are lower end models shooting modest speeds. Price will certainly keep many from shooting these speed bows. The only thing that will result in significantly more deer being killed is more hunters or more tags. I don't think one bow or several bows reaching 500fps will result in significantly more deer being killed. I did have to buy a block rated for 500fps because it shot through everything else. And my Havoc feels completely natural in the hand and shoots like a dream. So while I briefly looked at Ravins, I trusted my Tenpoint a lot more. I owned a Venom previously, killed a buck with it every year, and it never failed me once. I always felt like the thing was an accident waiting to happen. ![]() In particular I hate the free-floating bolt design i think it is dangerous. ![]() I simply did not feel safe cocking decocking or handling a Ravin. In the end I chose the Havoc for one criteria that trumps all the others. Other than mass weight which matters little sitting in a tree, it was pretty much neck and neck when comparing specs of the Havoc to the R29x. I desire all those qualities in a crossbow as well. When i was looking for a new crossbow I weighed all the same factors as others. I get irritated when i hear guys endlessly defending Ravins. ![]()
